#1. Wastewater Technician

Details: Full-time permanent position; salary range of $43,726 - $64,797

 

Job Summary: 

Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the Wastewater Technician works as part of a team to ensure the maintenance and operation of Municipal waste water infrastructure, and support other Public Works operations. While this position’s hours of work will primarily be Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (4 days per week), staggered schedules and shift work may be arranged by the Director, with the approval of the CAO, to provide necessary service delivery to the residents of the Municipality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and maintain Wastewater Collections certification; option to advance to Wastewater Treatment certification
  • Maintenance and repair of Municipal infrastructure, with a focus on wastewater operations (including sidewalks, buildings, municipal properties, etc.)
  • General maintenance and repair of Municipal equipment (including vehicles)
  • Summer & Winter maintenance of infrastructure (including equipment, sidewalks and municipally-owned roads etc.)
  • Carry out responsibilities in adverse and variable weather conditions
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Operate various types of equipment/machinery
  • Maintain daily work activity logs and produce reports as required
  • Maintain records on equipment and repairs and provide reports as required
  • Obtain and maintain other specific training (including related to safety, vehicle compliance, operation of equipment, etc.)
  • Participate in job specific and organizational specific training as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works or the CAO

Working environment:

  • Working outdoors, exposed to the elements (snow, rain, cold and hot temperatures, etc.)
  • May be required to go into confined spaces and to heights
  • Physically demanding activities
  • Driving vehicles and/or combination of equipment
  • Communication with public
  • May include working at a desk, writing and using computer

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Hold or be willing to obtain certifications in wastewater collections and/or treatment
  • Certification or license in an applicable trade considered an asset (e.i., electrical, mechanical, plumbing, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate with staff and public in a professional manner
  • Familiarity with computers and ability to learn new programs
  • Have and maintain valid NS Driver’s license
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems, repair and maintain equipment and machinery
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize workload
  • Physically capable of performing specific activities and maintenance tasks (i.e. lift heavy loads, work on your feet for long periods)
  • Be a team player and have a strong work ethic

#2. Visitor Experience Host - Cape Forchu Lighthouse

 

Anticipated Start Date: May 12, 2025 (pending funding)

Details: $18/hour, 35 hours per week

 

Job Summary:

Want to spend your summer by the ocean?  Do you like being outside and meeting new people?  Would you enjoy leading tours up to the top of the lighthouse tower?  We’ve got just the job for you!  

The Municipality of Yarmouth is looking for motivated individuals to fill the role of Visitor Experience Host at the Cape Forchu Lighthouse.  Candidates must be physically capable of climbing the 77 steps in the lighthouse several times per day.  Job duties include giving tours, sharing historical information, staffing the gift shop, using a cash register, shuttling visitors in a golf cart and light maintenance tasks.  Bi-lingual a plus but not required.

#3. Lighthouse Tour Guide & Host - Cape Forchu Lighthouse (Part-time)

About the Role:
Are you passionate about history, storytelling, and the breathtaking beauty of Nova Scotia’s coastline? We’re looking for an enthusiastic and friendly Lighthouse Tour Guide and Host to lead visitors on unforgettable tours at one of Nova Scotia’s iconic lighthouses, Cape Forchu Lighthouse. As a key ambassador of the site, you’ll share its history, maritime lore, and the important role lighthouses have played in coastal communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead engaging, informative, and interactive tours of the lighthouse and surrounding grounds.
  • Share stories about the lighthouse’s history, local maritime culture, and its significance to Nova Scotia.
  • Greet visitors with a warm welcome and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of guests during tours.
  • Assist with daily operations, including ticket sales, gift shop duties, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
  • Organize and participate in special events or educational programs hosted at the lighthouse.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for history, storytelling, and Nova Scotia’s maritime heritage.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of local geography and culture is a plus.
  • Ability to handle light physical activity, such as climbing stairs or walking on uneven terrain.

Additional Details:

  • Flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays - 15 to 25 hours per week.
  • Training on Cape Forchu’s Lighthouse history and tour content will be provided.
