Job Summary:

Want to spend your summer by the ocean?  Do you like being outside and meeting new people?  Would you enjoy leading tours up to the top of the lighthouse tower?  We’ve got just the job for you!  

The Municipality of Yarmouth is looking for motivated individuals to fill the role of Visitor Experience Host at the Cape Forchu Lighthouse.  Candidates must be physically capable of climbing the 77 steps in the lighthouse several times per day.  Job duties include giving tours, sharing historical information, staffing the gift shop, using a cash register, shuttling visitors in a golf cart and light maintenance tasks.  Bi-lingual a plus but not required.

About the Role:
Are you passionate about history, storytelling, and the breathtaking beauty of Nova Scotia’s coastline? We’re looking for an enthusiastic and friendly Lighthouse Tour Guide and Host to lead visitors on unforgettable tours at one of Nova Scotia’s iconic lighthouses, Cape Forchu Lighthouse. As a key ambassador of the site, you’ll share its history, maritime lore, and the important role lighthouses have played in coastal communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead engaging, informative, and interactive tours of the lighthouse and surrounding grounds.
  • Share stories about the lighthouse’s history, local maritime culture, and its significance to Nova Scotia.
  • Greet visitors with a warm welcome and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of guests during tours.
  • Assist with daily operations, including ticket sales, gift shop duties, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment.
  • Organize and participate in special events or educational programs hosted at the lighthouse.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for history, storytelling, and Nova Scotia’s maritime heritage.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of local geography and culture is a plus.
  • Ability to handle light physical activity, such as climbing stairs or walking on uneven terrain.

Additional Details:

  • Flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays - 15 to 25 hours per week.

About the Opportunity:
The Municipality of Yarmouth is excited to invite food vendors to submit expressions of interest in leasing and operating a take-out café at one of Nova Scotia's most scenic and iconic lighthouses, Cape Forchu Lighthouse. The unique location of Cape Forchu provides a perfect opportunity for vendors to serve visitors from around the world while showcasing delicious, locally inspired meals in a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

The café will be a seasonal leasing venture, and hours will be coordinated with the Cape Forchu Lighthouse Museum and Gift Shop. The successful proponent will have access to a well-situated space with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and will play a key role in enhancing the lighthouse experience for guests. The Municipality welcomes submissions from social enterprises, nonprofits, sole proprietorships, and established companies.

Vendor Requirements and Deliverables:

  • Operate a food and beverage take out café, offering a selection of grab and go meals, snacks, and beverages.
  • Ensure the menu aligns with local tastes, preferences, and the historical charm of the lighthouse.
  • Under a valid NS Food Establishment permit, maintain high standards of hygiene, food safety, and customer service.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including inventory, staffing, and financial records
  • Collaborate with the lighthouse management team to ensure seamless visitor experiences and events.
  • Assist the Municipality in promoting the café to increase visitor awareness and engagement.
  • Maintain, and provide proof of, Commercial and Professional General Liability and Worker’s Compensation

  • The contract duration will be from May 1st, 2025 to October 31st, 2025.
  • Contract terms to be negotiated include, but are not limited to: lease rate, event protocols, early termination conditions.
