About the Senior Safety Program
- Provides information and referral services to seniors.
- Holds educational sessions and has direct contact with seniors through in-home visits by the Senior Safety Coordinator.
- Allows seniors, the rural Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and community groups to work together to help prevent crime and keep communities safe.
- The program is free to all senior residents who are 55 years of age and over, however, no one will be refused assistance.
- The Seniors Safety Coordinator helps seniors with completing application forms for various programs and rebates and also offers free presentations to senior groups on various topics including personal safety, telephone and mail fraud and scam awareness, internet safety, elder abuse, and home safety.
All information received within the Senior Safety Program is confidential and not disclosed to outside sources unless the senior’s immediate safety is at risk.

Vial of Life
- pdf The Vial of Life provides emergency medical personnel with vital health information during a home emergency.
- Information is recorded on a medical form requiring a name, health card number, doctor’s name and number, people to be contacted in case of an emergency, medical conditions, allergies, and a list of medications taken.
- The form is then placed in a vial on a shelf in your refrigerator door.
- A Vial of Life sticker is placed on the outside of your fridge to indicate to medical personnel that vital health information is available.
- The Vial of Life can save valuable time in a home emergency.

Seniors Information Line
The Department of Seniors and Long-term Care has partnered with the 211 telephone referral service. If you have a question regarding programs and services available to Nova Scotia seniors, please call 211. The Department may still be contacted for programs that it is responsible for delivering.
The 211 service also handles Senior Abuse Information and Referral Phone Calls. Call 211 for information on abuse, resources and services available to help, or to talk about a situation that is concerning you. Your call will be kept confidential except as required by law.
Positive Aging Directory
The Positive Aging Directory contains a wealth of information for seniors. It is a comprehensive information directory published each year by the Department of Seniors and Long-term Care to give Nova Scotia’s seniors quick and easy access to the many programs and services for seniors in our province.
The Positive Aging Directory also serves as an essential information source for those who work with seniors, many of whom work in partnership with the Department to ensure listings in the directory are accurate and up to date.
Printed copies of the Positive Aging Directory are available free of charge at the Municipal Office in Hebron or by contacting Ashley Rhyno, Senior Safety Coordinator at 902-881-4099. You can also request a printed copy be mailed to you by going to Nova Scotia Department of Seniors.
